HOW TO WATCH ENGLISH MOVIES IN BERLIN
A fun fact for foreigners to learn about in Germany is that most non-German films and TV shows are dubbed over in German. It’s simultaneously hilarious and disturbing to hear famous voices throwing out memorable lines like Darth Vader uttering, “Nein, ich bin dein Vater.” 😅
Even though I’ve been in Berlin for a decade, there have been times I accidentally purchased movie tickets in German. I bought a ticket for a Berlinale documentary about the mass 2020 protests in Belarus. The movie aired in its original languages, Belarusian and Russian, but the subtitles were in German, not English. While I could glean the general context and emotion of the piece, I missed out on so much. I also watched the most recent Top Gun in German. It’s not really a movie that needs much translation, but it was quite the experience to hear Tom Cruise and John Hamm (aka Don Draper) “speaking” German.

German Language Classification for Movies
Before purchasing a movie ticket in Germany, it’s vital to understand the German language classification for movies. This will help ensure you don’t end up watching an English movie dubbed over in German. 🍿

The Cultural Experience of Watching a Movie in Berlin
We’ve already mentioned the love of dubbing, but there’s more. Depending on where you’re from in the world, watching a movie in Berlin can bring some cultural shocks.
⭐ For sure, you won’t be able to get butter on your popcorn. You’ll be lucky if you can even find salted popcorn, as Germans tend to prefer their popcorn sweet. ⭐ Whenever you purchase a movie ticket, you also buy a seat reservation. Alcoholic beverages like beer and wine are also permitted.
⭐ While the practice is less commonplace, sometimes intermissions are added to long movies over two hours. It’s a great time to load up on more snacks and take a bathroom break.

How can I tell if a movie will be in English?
Look for labels like OV, OmU, or OmeU. OV = original version (no subtitles), OmU = original language with German subs, OmeU = with English subs. Avoid anything marked DF — that’s dubbed in German.
What’s the safest label to guarantee English audio and subtitles?
OmeU is your best bet – original audio + English subtitles. But double-check theater listings anyway, especially for indie films or documentaries.
Are there any chains or apps that make it easier to find English films?
Try the Yorck Kino app or website, as they clearly label language versions and let you filter by OV/OmU. Also check Kinoheld and Cinestar.
Can I buy tickets in English online?
Yes, most major cinemas in Berlin have English versions of their booking sites, or at least a “Language” toggle in the menu.
Do open-air cinemas in Berlin show movies in English too?
Some do! Look out for Freiluftkino Hasenheide, Kulturforum, or Kreuzberg. Check language listings before you go.
Do they really serve wine at the movies?
Yes. It’s not unusual to see wine, Aperol spritz, or craft beer next to your popcorn.
Why are tickets so specific about seats?
In Germany, most cinemas assign seats when you book. Want a back row seat or aisle? Choose early.
Are subtitles always reliable?
Not always. Some screenings mark OV/OmU, which means subtitles might or might not appear. It depends on the film distributor. Ask staff if you’re unsure.
Can I find kid-friendly movies in English too?
Yes! Look for family movies listed as OV or OmeU on weekends. Zoo Palast and CineStar Cubix often offer options.
